Laurent Trévisanut, Head of Business Analysis & IT Services at Fundsquare, talks about the behind-the-scenes of his day-to-day job.

Laurent Trévisanut, Fundsquare

As a trained industrial engineer in electromechanics, I never considered working in IT – But my Masters’ thesis on machine programming in industrial environment gave me a taste for computer science.

I started my career in the glass industry – I was responsible for the production of a blast furnace in Dudelange.  I then embraced my IT vocation as an IT analyst and developer at Dexia Bil. My mission was to support the retail banking departments and to work on Swift developments.

I then joined the Luxembourg Stock Exchange Group in 2000 – I first started at Luxembourg Stock Exchange by working in the Datawarehouse and next for CCLux, as a project leader. I then moved to Finesti with a supplementary role of Head of Technical Support. I was then promoted Head of IT Services, when Fundsquare was created in June 2013. I then took over the BA Services in my department.

These experiences gave me the chance to be part of the activities and growth within the three entities, which made the success of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange Group and contributed to its value chain in terms of products and IT solutions.

Data is the core of my business – In 2002, I took part in the ‘Référentiel Fonds’ project of Finesti. My missions included the development of the central database as well as of our data collection, dissemination and publication channels, via the web portal and in white labelling.

One business need leading to another, we since then included our e-file.lu platform for OPC regulatory reporting, which is now used by more than 900 companies in Luxembourg and Europe.

I am very familiar with the whole data lifecycle – These projects allowed me to understand the data and their requirements. They gave me the opportunity to work closely with the business teams, and to understand their needs and those of our clients.

My integration into Fundsquare was therefore natural and logical– I also had a good knowledge and understanding of the investment fund business. And thanks to my history within the Luxembourg Stock Exchange Group, I knew the whole set of our IT solutions. The move was therefore the continuation and the recognition of the work accomplished together with my teams.

My teams include 15 BA and 22 IT people. We position ourselves as a real partner to the business.

My teams include 15 BA and 22 IT people – The number of my staff is roughly equal to the total number of Fundsquare’s operational teams. My teams include French, Belgian, Senegalese, Greek nationals. I am a Belgian citizen. We are quite multicultural, so English is becoming the common language within the business departments.

We position ourselves as a real partner to the business – Our project managers, business analysts and developers work together within one sole department, so we can build a strong dialogue and efficient interactions with our operational departments. As a result, we can better understand the needs of our stakeholders and provide them with the functional solutions they need to serve their end-customers.

We are very solution-oriented – My teams manage the complete articulation of the project: from the definition of the design, up to the development, testing, and implementation of the solution. This includes the management of possible problems and incidents.

We chose the agility approach. We strive to bring value to the Business, while remaining open to new technologies and to incorporate these in the right place at the right time.

We chose the agility approach – Because we strive to bring value to the Business, while remaining open to new technologies and to incorporate these in the right place at the right time. Thanks to this iterative mindset, we can always provide the operational departments with the first elements of solutions, they can immediately make use of.

I am always very happy and proud of my teams – Especially when they offer tailored and scalable solutions that fulfill our end-users’ expectations, while providing maintainability and scalability. They also remain pragmatic and quick-win-oriented, so that they can adapt to the market constraints.

Moreover, I am very lucky to have team leaders, who are a very good relay in the teams, and help me manage the day-to-day.

Therefore, I would like to take the opportunity here to thank all my staff, for their remarkable work and for the positive energy they bring, especially in this Covid period.

I have a multi-hat role. Our IT is very transversal and covers the needs of all our departments and businesses at Fundsquare

I have a multi-hat role – Because our IT is very transversal and covers the needs of all our departments and businesses at Fundsquare, including the operations, sales, and marketing.

My day-to-day consists of supporting and monitoring the smooth running of projects and helping when needed. I therefore listen very much to my staff.

I have a very exciting job, which is technically and humanly quite rich and varied.

I have three main missions – The most important is probably that of advising the Business. The goal is to maximize the value input and to set the best trade-offs on the level of solution needed, and on the implementation timeline.

I am also responsible for defining and monitoring the progress of the IT transformation roadmap; I am as well the sponsor on this program.

The third mission includes, among others, the budgetary management, liaising with the IT department of the Stock Exchange to maintain a Group approach, and relations with external companies.

I also participate in workshops – I contribute to functional analyses and to technical studies. I am as well a touch point with our team leaders and project managers.

Our technical environment has incredibly evolved during the last 10 years – We have replaced our architecture with the latest technologies. Thus, we have completely revised the design and user path of our e-file platform. We have also put a strong focus on automation and more particularly on automated quality control.

The objective is to set up a Data as a Service solutions infrastructure that responds to the real business needs and uses of our customers, in the most simple, fluid, and intuitive way.

We contribute to Fundsquare's value chain. Our projects are key because our company is rooted in technology.

The BA and IT Department contribute to Fundsquare's value chain – Our projects are key because our company is rooted in technology. It is all about network, connectivity, data management and provision, based on flexibility, scalability, and performance.

We are a toolbox and force of proposal, as our generic solutions allow the operational teams to be as autonomous and independent as possible vis-à-vis IT.

The more independent and autonomous they are, the more satisfied they will be with their IT. Because they need freedom and to be able to evolve and operate on their own.

We are fortunate to have a very close management – Our Directors are constantly available, humane in their approach, and very attentive to our teams. They recognize the need to move forward and innovate. They are very curious about IT-related subjects with a great need to understand how they work, and how to adapt this in accordance with our DNA.

Our Directors favour a step back-approach to business challenges, in order to find a generic solution. More generally, our customers often face the same problems, but perceive and express these differently. Despite these seemingly diverse, varied and irreconcilable issues, we can provide them with a generic solution, that can be adapted to their needs and be quickly implemented.

During my spare time, I tinker – I do a lot on small and large maintenance work in our house and exteriors in Belgium.

I am of course a geek of home automation and IoT. I also enjoy badminton and walking, with my two daughters (13 and 19 years old) and my wife, an industrial engineer, who also works in IT development.
